Built-in Ironing Boards
 by Shannon McMahon Bruchal

If you're like me, ironing happens a lot less than it needs to, and not just because ironing is tedious, but also because the time and effort it takes to get set up can be just as much of a chore. Hauling out the ironing board and lugging it to wherever you decide to set it up, plugging in the iron and gathering the supplies gets to be a workout in itself. Built-in ironing boards, or ironing centers, as they are sometimes called, eliminate the hassle of setting up because they store everything all in one place, and stow away nicely when you are finished. A variety of built-in ironing boards are available, with an array of features and options.

Wall Mount Ironing Boards
Wall mount ironing boards are installed directly to the wall with a metal frame. These ironing boards  fold and flip back up when not in use so they are out of the way.

Hafele
The Hafele Wall Mount Ironing Board mounts easily on any wall and is equipped with a turning mechanism that allows the board to be turned left or right up to 90 degrees. The board can also be locked in the left, right or inclined position if necessary. When you're finished, the ironing board folds in half and then up and out of the way. An optional wall cover keeps the ironing board out of sight when it's not in use.

Drawer Ironing Boards
The drawer ironing board fits into any drawer cavity. When the drawer is pulled out, the ironing board unfolds and rises to the height of your counter and locks in place. The ironing board tucks away in the drawer when you're done.

Hafele
Hafele's Ironfix Built-in Drawer Ironing Board enables the drawer front to fold down, making it easier to iron trousers and shirts. The hardware components are made of epoxy coated metal. The ironing board itself is covered in a heat resistant fabric. An Ironfix Replacement Board Cover and an Ironfix Sleeve Board are available separately.

Feeny
The Pressto Ironing Boards from Feeny raise up and out of the cabinet on ball bearing slides, giving  you a larger work space. The ironing boards fit a minimum cabinet height opening of four inches and a minimum cabinet width opening of thirteen inches. The width of the board is 12 inches. The length of the folded board is 23 inches and the unfolded length is 33 5/8 inches. The boards come with a padded silver-gray Teflon padded cover.

Rev-A-Shelf
Rev-A-Shelf's Rev-A-Board Ironing Board is easy to use. All you need to do is pull the drawer out and unfold the ironing board -- it will rise automatically. The built-in locking device ensures the board height will match that of your countertop. The Rev-A-Board has an adjustable width from 14¼ inches (362 mm) to 19 5/8 inches (499 mm). The ironing board only needs 4 inches (102 mm) of height clearance to mount in either frame or frameless constructed cabinets or furniture.

Built-In Ironing Centers
The built-in ironing center keeps everything you need right at your fingertips. The cabinet holds the ironing board, iron and your ironing supplies when you are not using them. Some models have an electrical outlet so you can keep your iron plugged in all the time, a spotlight  to shine light on your work area and an indicator light that lets you know when the power is on. There are also ironing boards that swivel so you can reach all the angles. Built-in ironing centers are available in a wall mount or recess mount formats to accommodate different wall configurations. The recess mount ironing center is installed into a hole cut into the wall so that it is flush and gives a streamlined profile. The wall mount model is mounted directly to the wall and extends into the room several inches more than the recess mount version.

Air King
The Ironing Centers from Air King include an all metal cabinet with an unfinished birch wood door that can be stained or painted. The 42" ventilated board comes with a cover and pad. A built-in 40-watt directional light shines the light on your workspace. The 60-minute silent timer switch and pilot light indicator let you know the unit is working. A shelf provides storage space for your iron and the power shut-off switch turns the iron off when the ironing board is in the upright storage position. The ironing center can be wall or recess mounted.

Broan
The Deluxe Ironing Center from Broan features an all-metal construction with a 42" ventilated metal board that is durable and resistant to moisture. The board comes with an iron pad and cover. Three available height settings provide optimal ironing comfort, and a 180 degree swivel allows the ironing boards to fit into tight corners. The 12" high hot iron storage shelf is deep and tall in order to accommodate larger irons. An additional shelf stores other ironing supplies. A pilot light with a silent timer indicates when the power is on. The built-in light gives you additional and directed light.  When you close the door of the ironing center, the safety switch/auto shut-off turns off the electric supply. A three-prong grounded outlet provides a handy place to plug in your iron. This ironing center comes without a door. Custom doors, available in an unfinished Oak Raised Panel, an unfinished Birch flat panel and a White raised panel are sold separately. Hinges are included with the doors.  The Deluxe Ironing Center works as a surface mount ( a collar is required and is sold separately) or a recess mount.

Broan's Standard Ironing Centers are equipped with a ventilated, moisture-resistant metal board, a durable 24 gauge steel construction with a white finish and your choice of a simulated Oak or White flat panel door. The door has a magnetic catch that keeps it closed. Custom doors are also available. Store your iron on the 12-inch high hot shelf specially designed for larger irons, and the rest of your supplies on the additional shelf.  A silent timer and pilot light let you know the unit is working. The built-in light illuminates your work area. An automatic safety switch shuts off the electrical supply when the door is closed. The built-in three-prong grounded outlet is a convenient place to plug in your iron. The Standard Ironing Center can be used as a recess mount, which will extend into the room approximately 3¾" with the door. With the wall mount installation, a collar is required, and it is sold separately.

The Basic Ironing Center from Broan is non-electrical. It is made of 24 gauge steel with a white finish and comes with a simulated oak or white door. Custom doors are also available. The ventilated metal board is moisture-resistant and comes with a pad and cover.  A 12" high hot iron shelf is deep enough and tall enough to store larger irons, while an 11" high additional shelf is perfect for other ironing supplies.  Mount your Basic Ironing Center directly on the wall with a collar (sold separately) or install it inside the wall as a recess mount.

All-In-One Laundry Centers

Home Styles
An all-in-one laundry center has everything you need for to get the laundry and the ironing done easily. This laundry center from Home Styles has a solid wood frame in a white finish and a natural solid wood top with a polyurethane finish. The lift-up top reveals two laundry bags for storage and sorting. When the top is closed, it provides the perfect space for folding clothes. A small utility drawer holds clothespins, scissors or anything else that you need to have on hand. The framed door beneath the drawer offers additional storage space. A storage rack holds spray bottles and laundry supplies. The sturdy metal rack hangs clean laundry and ironing. The fold-down ironing board provides ample space for ironing all your clothes. Plastic locking casters allow you to move your laundry center as you need to, and also keep your workspace stable when necessary.

Freestanding Ironing Boards
Freestanding ironing boards have come a long way from their humble beginnings too. Ironing boards today are larger like the Brabantia 18" Ironing Board, which is extra wide to provide a larger surface for odd sized and shaped items.  The Reliable Home Ironing Table is height adjustable from 27½" to 38" to accommodate different-sized people more comfortably. Storage features like iron rests and linen racks keep everything at your fingertips and make ironing less of a chore.
