Kitchen Islands and Kitchen Carts
 by Shannon McMahon Bruchal

A number of years ago, I received a kitchen cart as a gift. The drop-leaf cart had a drawer and two shelves. At that time, I was living in an apartment with a large kitchen, but I had very little counter space. Whenever I needed to do any kind of food preparation, I just rolled the cart to wherever I needed it and I had an instant workspace. All these years later, I still roll out my cart when I need extra counter space in the kitchen.

Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes. When you're trying to decide how and what you need to increase workspace and storage space, a kitchen island or kitchen cart is something you may want to consider. A kitchen island is usually larger than a kitchen cart, and works well in kitchens with an open layout.  Kitchen islands generally provide a work area that is stationary, staying in one place while you work. Some islands do come with casters, however. Kitchen carts are best utilized in smaller kitchens where space is at a minimum. They are on casters, which allow you to move the carts wherever you need them, but the casters also lock to stabilize your workspace when necessary.

To determine whether a kitchen island or a kitchen cart would work for you, assess your needs. What size is your kitchen? How do you imagine yourself using a kitchen island or cart? How much storage do you need? The answers to those questions will help you to decide which one is best for you. If you choose a kitchen island, make sure you get the right size for your kitchen. Remember to allow 36" to 42" of space between your cabinets and appliances and the island, so you will have enough space to maneuver.

There are many different types of kitchen islands and kitchen carts available. From traditional to modern, residential to commercial, the choices are endless. Choose from wood or stainless steel, or a combination of the two. A built-in cooktop, breakfast bar, wire baskets, drawers and cabinets are all options that add to the functionality of your island or cart. At Kitchen Accessories Unlimited, you will find a wide variety of kitchen islands and kitchen carts to fit any style or budget.
