Organize Your Laundry Room
 by Shannon McMahon Bruchal

Laundry rooms come in many shapes and sizes. Some are grand in scale with all the latest in laundry technology, while others are small enough to be tucked away behind closet doors. Whatever the size, your laundry room is one of the busiest rooms in the house.

The key to keeping any laundry room running smoothly and efficiently is organization. Is there sufficient space to store your cleaners and detergents, sort and fold clothes and do the ironing? If not, you may want to consider ways to make your laundry room work harder for you.

If you have a large laundry room, you may want to install shelves or cabinets to hold all your necessary laundry items and keep them where you need them. Baskets and bins also help to organize and keep clutter at a minimum. A folding table allows you to fold your laundry right out of the dryer. Or, install a counter for maximum workspace. Add a utility sink for hand-washing, rinsing or soaking.

For smaller laundry rooms, an all-in-one laundry center does it all without taking up precious space. You can fold, iron, sort and hang your clothes to dry and then roll it away when you're done. Most people do not have a convenient place to do their ironing. The middle of the kitchen, bedroom or living room usually end up serving as makeshift ironing areas. A great way to conserve space is to use a built-in ironing board. Built-in or hideaway ironing boards fold up and out of sight when not in use. They can be installed on the wall, either recess or surface mounted, as well as in a drawer, and come with storage options too.

Keeping your clothes in order, whether they're dirty or clean can be a challenge, but it doesn't have to be. Help everyone in the family stay organized with their very own hamper. From stainless steel to cloth and plastic, there are hampers for every need. For ease of movement and a contemporary look, a stainless steel hamper with wheels makes it easy to transport dirty clothing to the laundry area. To maximize floor space, use a hamper that mounts into a vanity cabinet or onto a cabinet or closet door. Just slide it out when you need it and keep it hidden when you don't. If style is essential, use a decorative hamper with a removable cotton lining for carrying clothes to the laundry room.

Once your clothes are clean, a rolling laundry cart or a foldable garment rack hangs them up to dry or keeps freshly ironed clothes from getting wrinkled. Some also have bags to sort your laundry. To press your clothes like a professional, try a steam press like they use at the drycleaner for a wrinkle-free look.

No matter what size laundry room you have, the solutions for making it more organized and efficient are plentiful. For the best results, choose the options that make the most sense with the size and function of your room.
