Choosing a Medicine Cabinet
 by Shannon McMahon Bruchal

In all likeliness, you haven't given much thought to that medicine cabinet that looks you in the eye every morning. Chances are, it was the very same one that was there when you purchased the house, or the one the builder put in back when the house was first constructed. It holds your medications, toothpaste, face cream, etc. and allows you to see how you look. If you have redone your bathroom recently, perhaps you have updated it since then, but if not, you may want to consider your options.

There are two kinds of medicine cabinets, surface mount and recess mount. The surface mount medicine cabinets are the easiest to install because they are mounted right to the wall. Recess mount medicine cabinets require an opening in the wall for them to fit into. If you happen to prefer a recess mount, make sure the wall behind the medicine cabinet is free of pipes and wiring.

Once you have figured out the type of medicine cabinet you prefer, it's time to decide which design will suit you best. If clean and simple is your style, try a frameless medicine cabinet. These are available in different sizes and shapes as well as with or without lighting. Framed medicine cabinets run the gamut from cabinets with very simple framed edging to those with elaborately designed crown moldings.

If you'd like to add a splash of color to your bathroom, the iColor Bathroom Cabinet from Broan is just the thing. The front is a frameless mirror, and the inside frame is available in six bold colors, for a vibrant , eye-catching effect. Modular medicine cabinets allow you to position and adjust the shelves inside the cabinet to fit taller or odd sized or shaped items. If illumination is a must for you, there are traditional and contemporary medicine cabinets that have lighting built right in. Corner cabinets utilize a smaller amount of space, making them perfect for diminutive bathrooms. Perfume cabinets have a designated space for storing and showing off perfume bottles and small collectibles. For added luxury, consider a handcrafted medicine cabinet with European styling or a three-door cabinet with a gold or silver frame.

The medicine cabinet you choose will not only reflect your face every time you look at it, but also your personal style and sense of design.
