Keeping Trash in Order
 by Shannon McMahon Bruchal

Keeping your home organized can be difficult, especially when it comes to managing the trash and the recycling. Since people are now sorting all of their trash in order to recycle bottles, cans, papers and compost, it becomes necessary to find a storage solution that is the least obtrusive and the most efficient. Trash cans or bins are available in a myriad of shapes, sizes and materials. The choice you make will depend on where and how you plan to use them.

If you are looking for a freestanding trash can, there are several options.  Stainless steel trash cans are very popular, especially those that hide fingerprints.  Step-on trash cans work with a foot pedal, so your hands don't have to touch the bin itself. The butterfly step can has a split door that opens from the middle, making it perfect for low-clearance areas, the counter.  A soft touch garbage can opens with a gentle touch to the lid. The hands-free trash can operates via infrared technology and a smart chip that knows when to open and close the lid. The bullet garbage can has a push door and comes in a variety of colors and sizes, making it suitable for almost any decor.

Built-in trash cans and recycling bins keep garbage and recyclables out of sight and take up less space than freestanding ones. The containers are mounted to the side or the floor of the cabinet with brackets and slide out when needed.  A double waste bin has two bins for sorting and slides out with ease. The swing out model is mounted to the side of the cabinet. When the door is opened, the lid, which stays inside the cabinet, tilts automatically.  A sink base waste container fits around existing plumbing under the sink.  There's even a counter mount waste container that sits inside the cabinet and is fully accessible from the countertop. Its size makes it great for small spaces. For recycling, a waste management system provides separate containers for glass, plastic and metal, as well as a canvas bag for paper and fits in a cabinet.  Freestanding recycling bins are perfect for the basement or garage, making it easy to sort and store a large amount of recyclables.

There are many different kinds of trash cans or bins designed to help organize and store your trash. It's as simple as selecting the right one for the job.
